Common SEO Mistakes #2: Building Backlinks
Building backlinks is one of the most difficult things to learn as a beginner SEO student. What I see with most people studying SEO in the early stages is they devalue backlinking or they think signing up to sites that give you thousands of backlinks is a good thing.
The truth is that backlinking is something you build up over time. Quality backlinks are what matters most in your ranking. Getting a backlink from the President’s personal website would be more valuable than tons of backlinks from black-hat Joe’s website. Just think about it this way. Quality over quantity.
What is a backlink?
A backlink means almost the same thing as a referral. A backlink is when someone likes or reads your content feels like it is worth sharing. Worth pointing their readers to you on their website or other means. It helps rank your pages, keywords, posts, and website.
What is anchor text?
Anchor text is the link you actually click on. I will show you a link to the first post of Common SEO Mistakes #1: Choosing Keywords.
What is domain authority?
Domain authority is the score for a domain on the rank factors for search engines. The higher the site is the more their backlinks are worth.
How to build proper backlinks?
Create HIGH-QUALITY CONTENT! This is a great way to get people to link to your site. If I write an article about the UFC on how performance enhancing drugs are killing the sport of mixed martial arts, and my competitor writes an article on the same subject, I will make sure that my content is going to be way more informative and high quality than my competitors. When we both market our material on the same level playing field people will most likely to share my content than my competitor.
Use social media as a way to get your content out there. It is a way to get people to read your content and possibly link back to it. I really like to use social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, Google +. Reddit, Stumbleupon, and if I have some awesome images I even do Pinterest. I do use some other popular ones, but I don’t focus as hard on them.
Make sure you post every blog post or a page you can on social media. This will help your readers get a chance to read all of your websites content. Do this over a time period like 2-4 posts per week. Do not do it all at once. You don’t want to see spammy.
Do not go and spam guest blogs or keep trying to copy and paste your posts that you have on your own website. This is something that will not help you at all. If someone trusts you to blog on their website then make sure your blog is some great content. You don’t just guest blog to get a backlink, but you guest blog to show you know your subject and you put out great content. It will help market yourself in many different ways, but that backlink does help.
Don’t be afraid to ask
The worst thing that can usually happen is someone tells you they do not feel like it is in their best advantage to link to your site. Don’t be afraid of being told “no” because the ones that say “yes” will be entirely worth it. If everyone says no to the content you posted then take a look at your content and see where you can improve it.
Don’t beg for backlinks or even offer trade’s. Just say something like, ” Hey, thanks for liking my post. If you don’t mind sharing or linking back to the post so it helps other people as well.” isn’t a bad way to ask. This is a way to not beg but just ask for help on content people already like.
Hopefully, this was helpful for you to learn some of the common mistakes not to make. Backlinking takes time and requires a lot of patience. Slow and steady will get you to where you need to be without having to worry about those pesky Google penalties. Building a website is just like building a business from scratch. It takes a while to build a customer base and gain notoriety but once you get there things will move forward more quickly and be a little less tedious. Just keep your head up and do things the right way and in the long run you will not regret it.
